What are the different types of clients?
The Console client runs in the background and is launched from a terminal window (command line i.e. DOS window), to which they output text messages about the simulation's progress. The graphical clients (former GUI or current System Tray) run in the background and has a graphics window interface that allows you to see the protein being simulated. High Performance beta clients are detailed below.
V6 SMP and GPU "High Performance Clients"
Please note that these are beta clients, and are likely to have some rough edges, but we expect that they should work reasonably well for all donors. Please be careful. These v6 clients were testing our SMP and GPU methods, and we've smoothed out many of their bugs in our V7 client. The GPU and SMP/multicore clients are high performance clients, so they use more system resources, but are also much more productive. Please consider the use of these clients carefully.
Finally, note that while the points per day (PPD) for these clients are higher than the classic client, they can require a lot more maintenance due to their experimental or beta nature. If you would prefer to have a client which runs as smoothly as possible, we suggest you run our main V7 software.
High Performance Clients
There are several types of high performance clients. SMP refers to multi-core CPUs. GPU3 refers to the latest generation Folding@home GPU client. Also note the V7 Folding@home client has these functions (SMP and GPU) built in and will not require a special individual clients.
